The 2025 edition of the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio opened under high anticipation as Alex Palou led the field from pole position with Christian Lungaard lining up alongside him on the front row for the 90-lap battle.
However, the race barely had time to develop before chaos unfolded. With an incident at Turn 2 bringing out the first caution of the day. Josef Newgarden, Graham Rahal, and Will Power were all caught up in the collision, and Newgarden’s car suffered terminal damage. Power was able to return to the pit lane, rejoining the race shortly after. For Team Penske, it was a difficult start and a short day for two of its key drivers.
After a five-lap caution period, racing resumed with Palou comfortably maintaining the lead. Behind him, Kyffin Simpson and Lundgaard were locked in a spirited battle for second place. Lundgaard eventually took control of the position, while Palou began to build a steady advantage at the front.
As the race progressed, Simpson’s early pace began to unravel with a few driving errors dropping him down the order. This opened the door for Colton Herta, moving up into third before a second and final caution was issued on lap 31. It was Christian Rasmussen who had lost control and slid off onto the grass, ending his race. The yellow flag bunched up the field again, and the race resumed on lap 36 with the top three still being Palou, Lundgaard, and Herta.
Entering the second half of the race, the dynamic at the front began to shift. Scott Dixon, running a carefully managed fuel strategy, began to emerge as a serious contender. While Palou continued to control the pace out front, a mistake on lap 56 where he briefly ran off-track cut into his lead and allowed both Herta and Dixon to close the gap.
Dixon executed his final pit stop on lap 62, a smooth and efficient 8-second stop that positioned him positively for the closing laps. Palou responded on lap 72 with a quicker 6.1-second stop, rejoining the track still in the lead, but now with colder tyres and Dixon within striking distance.
With six laps to go, the pressure mounted. Palou made a second small error, again running wide and off-track momentarily. This time, Dixon capitalized immediately, seizing the lead with a clean overtake. Palou stayed close behind for the remainder of the race, but Dixon’s experience and composure in the final laps proved decisive. Reaching the chequered flag ahead of Palou, Scott Dixon secured his first win of the season and extended his career record to an unprecedented 21 consecutive seasons with an IndyCar win.
Behind Palou, Christian Lundgaard recovered to take the final podium spot in third after a strong and consistent drive. Colton Herta finished fourth, having challenged for the lead earlier in the race, and Pato O’Ward rounded out the top five with a steady performance through the field.
The NTT 2025 INDYCAR SERIES returns on the 12th July, with the Synk 275 from Iowa Speedway.
