The Iowa Speedway double-header got underway on Saturday with the Synk 275 getting a big weekend of racing underway.
Starting from pole, Josef Newgarden led the field into Turn 1, with Conor Daly and Felix Rosenqvist close behind. While the leaders got away cleanly, the yellow flag was quickly brought out due to a mistake at the back of the field by Colton Herta, who went off track just moments after the start.
Racing resumed on lap 8, with Newgarden continuing to control the pace from the front. Over 60 laps of green-flag racing followed, allowing strategy and consistency to play a major role. During this stretch, Chip Ganassi Racing’s Alex Palou and Scott Dixon gradually worked their way into second and third, while Daly and Rosenqvist slipped down the order.
Lap 75 brought the second caution of the 275 when Jacob Abel lost control and crashed into the wall, ending his race. After a ten-lap caution period, the green flag waved once again, and the restart saw a dramatic reshuffle at the front. Pato O’Ward made a bold charge, first overtaking Scott Dixon and then immediately passing Palou to move into second. Conor Daly, taking advantage of the momentum behind O’Ward, followed with a pair of nearly identical overtakes to reclaim third. Newgarden managed to hold on to the lead during this flurry of moves, but the top three now featured Newgarden, O’Ward, and Daly.
The race took another turn when Kyle Kirkwood, second in the championship standings, crashed out in similar fashion to Abel, dealing a blow to his title hopes. Meanwhile, Will Power and Scott McLaughlin began to make progress through the field, with Power climbing into third place. Daly, who had surged earlier, found himself under pressure and was eventually passed by McLaughlin in a decisive move.
As the leaders made their final pit stops, O’Ward and Newgarden entered the pits in sync. The Arrow McLaren crew delivered a crucially fast stop, allowing O’Ward to rejoin ahead of Newgarden. However, O’Ward was at a disadvantage on colder tyres as they entered the final phase of the race. With 18 laps remaining, O’Ward led Newgarden and Power, setting the stage for a tense finish.
That momentum was disrupted by a red flag after Noah Siegel suffered a heavy crash into the wall, forcing the field back to pit lane. When racing resumed, O’Ward managed to defend his position at the front, only for another caution to be issued moments later following Callum Ilott’s crash.
With just nine laps remaining after the final restart, O’Ward was able to manage his tyres and track position under pressure from Newgarden. He maintained the lead to take the chequered flag, securing his first win of the season in a race defined by composure and precise execution.
Josef Newgarden crossed the line in second, while Will Power completed the podium in third. Scott McLaughlin finished fourth, and championship leader Alex Palou came home fifth after running in podium contention earlier in the race.
The Iowa Speedway double-header resumes on Sunday 13th July with the Farm to Finish 275.
