The streets of Toronto delivered high drama in the 2025 Ontario Honda Dealers Indy, as Pato O’Ward claimed his second victory in just eight days, mastering the 11 turns of the tight city circuit.

Before the race even began, the grid was reduced to 26 cars after Santino Ferrucci suffered heavy damage to his A.J. Foyt Chevrolet in the morning warm-up. With insufficient time and parts to complete repairs, his team was forced to withdraw. As the race began, it was Colton Herta starting from pole position, joined on the front row by championship leader Alex Palou, with Marcus Armstrong lining up just behind. However, Kyle Kirkwood made the biggest impact off the line, storming from sixth on the grid to third place by the end of the opening lap.

Tyre strategy was pivotal in the early stages of the race. Several drivers, including O’Ward, elected to pit early to shed the soft compound tyres in favour of the more durable hards. This gave early advantage to those who had started on the harder tyre, most notably Alex Palou, who emerged as the early race leader.

The first full-course caution came on lap 3, when Scott McLaughlin suffered tyre damage that ended his day prematurely. After the restart, Palou maintained control, but another caution was issued on lap 30 when Alexander Rossi made unforced contact with the wall, damaging his tyres and bringing the yellow flags out for seven laps. The race had barely resumed on lap 37 when another incident brought out a fresh caution. A collision between Josef Newgarden and Jacob Abel ended both drivers’ races and further shuffled the grid.

By the midway point, O’Ward was making serious gains. Starting seventh, he made key overtakes on Will Power and Conor Daly to run third behind Kyffin Simpson and Rinus VeeKay by lap 45. His defining moment came on lap 58, when he completed his final pit stop and emerged ahead of VeeKay, grasping effective control of the race with just over 30 laps remaining.

With the front-runners settled, a late caution three laps from the finish, caused by a collision between Nolan Siegel and Felix Rosenqvist, froze the order. The race finished under a yellow flag, handing O’Ward a composed and strategic victory on the streets of Toronto.

The podium was rounded out by Rinus VeeKay in second and Kyffin Simpson in third, both scoring their first podium finishes of the season in what could be career-defining results.

For Palou, it was a day to forget. A misjudged strategy saw him fall down the order, eventually finishing 12th, allowing O’Ward to slash 30 points from the Spaniard’s championship lead and reignite the title battle heading into the final four races.

The 2025 NTT INDYCAR SERIES will resume in a weeks’ time with the Java House Grand Prix of Monterey on the 27th July.
